Thame Bowls Club had a stunning victory over local rivals Watlington last week in the quarter final of the Oxfordshire League Cup. Having lost several key players from their usual team Thame started as underdogs but overcame Watlington by just one shot in a gripping match. Andy Walker skipped one rink to a 16-13 win whilst Club Captain John Timms and Graham Penn skipped rinks which lost 16-21 and 11-15 respectively.
It was therefore left to Paul Heafey's rink ably assisted by John Coward, Jim Tite and Casper DuPreez who outbowled the Watlington four skipped by ex-Thame player Ron Slater to win by 19 shots to 12. The narrowest of victories puts Thame in the semi-finals to be played in August.
On Saturday Thame traveled to Maidenhead Town and although winning on two of the 5 rinks lost by just 16 shots overall. Top rink for Thame was that of Jonathan Dadson, Alfred Jochum, Leonard Grimshaw and skipped by Captain for the Day Paul Heafey who won by 22 shots to 15.
On Sunday Watlington visited Thame again, this time for a Mixed Friendly match and once again the home side proved too strong for their visitors winning by an impressive 116 shots to 68. Top rink was that of Captain Ron Duncan backed up by Hazel Westcott, Robin Jenner and Caroline Walker with a massive 46 shots to 11 victory.
In gusty wind conditions and on rinks made heavy by the morning's rain, Thame's mid-week team lost to Waddesdon by 113 shots to 67. The only winning rink (18-16) was skipped by Barbara Waters, ably assisted by John Rust and Margaret Boynton.
