Thame Bowls Club members on tour in 2009...
A large group of 48 members of Thame Bowls Club enjoyed their trip to Cheltenham on July 1st to play what is now becoming the Annual Ten Rinks Match against Cheltenham Bowls Club.

On the hottest day of the year so far, the (much appreciated) air-conditioned coach left Thame at 9am and arrived at the Suffolk Square rinks at around 10.30am. After unloading all Bowls equipment members then headed for the nearby Montpellier district of Cheltenham to seek a shady corner and cool refreshment. By now the temperature was approaching 30 Degrees !

After lunch at the various pubs/restaurants/wine bars members returned to Suffolk Square suitably refreshed and ready for a 2pm start.

Captain John Timms had agreed with Cheltenham Captain John Doody to play just 18 Ends due to the sweltering conditions.
After 10 Ends with Thame trailing by 14 shots across the 10 Rinks players wearily retired for Tea & Biscuits in the Clubhouse.
After the break Thame slightly improved their overall performance but after the 18 ends were still 11 shots behind their hosts scoring 144 shots against Cheltenham's 155.

Notable performances from Thame were the Top Rink of skip Paul Heafey ably assisted by Jonathan Dadson, Jan Sargent and Marthie Du Preez, who won 21 - 11 and the "Penn Family Rink"skipped by Graham with grandson Thomas leading,  daughter Amanda at 2 and Doreen at 3. They won 14 - 13 in a very tight game.

Other winning Rinks for Thame (winning on 6 of the 10 Rinks) were skips John Timms (16 - 13) George Andrews (18-11), Maxine Plested (17 - 12)  and Vic Brooks ((20 - 11).

Complete Rink Scores from Rink 3 through to Rink 11 were as follows;
Richard Plested, Marion Keal, Terry Emberson, Chris Billingham  10 - 20;
Dave Holland, Judy Copley, Barbara Waters, Bill Giles 13 - 22;
Sharon Heafey, Maurice (guest), Casper Du Preez, Vic Brooks (20 - 11);

Due to the popularity of this trip, the fixture has already been arranged for next year and therefore another great day out to look forward to.
