Background Note – Clubhouse Rebuild

As you may be aware, all members of Thame Bowls Club are also members of Thame Sports Club Limited. This is also true for all members of Thame Tennis Club.

Thame Sports Club Limited is the legal entity that owns the land and main buildings used by both the Bowls and Tennis Clubs.

We are able to undertake a rebuild due primarily to generous grants from:

* South Oxfordshire District Council

* SODC/Thame Town Council Section 106 money that comes from developers of houses in Thame

* Sport England

plus, if needed, top-up loans have been promised from:

* Thame Town Council

* Oxfordshire Lawn Tennis Association

The Bowls and Tennis Clubs have and will continue to put money into the project and Peter Bozier, the Sports Club Chairman has successfully bid for various one-off grants over the past couple of years from Awards for All, Persimmon and others.  In addition, Ken Bennell has negotiated a donation from Bellway Homes.  We also have assistance from our local solicitors Lightfoots who are signed up to sponsor the Sports Club over a period of 5 years.

Until 2017 the Sports Club had four Trustees overseeing the property with a Committee effectively running the day to day issues of the joint Bowls and Tennis Clubs facilities.  The rebuild project however required that a Limited Company by Guarantee be formed, which was created on 23rdAugust 2017.

Thame Sports Club Limited has 2 directors - Bill Giles from the Bowls Club and Neil Morgan from Tennis.  In addition, the Sports Club Chairman is Peter Bozier from the Tennis Club and the Treasurer is Chris Shannon from Bowls.  It should be noted that Peter has been excellent in driving the project forward with dogged determination over these past few years.

These four company officers are supported by additional co-opted representatives from the Tennis and Bowls Clubs in Anne Kirkland (Secretary and Tennis Club member), Ann Green (Tennis) and Ian Rutherford (Bowls).  These make up the Sports Club Committee and is the decision-making body.

The project is supported by architect Paul Swart of Blackwood Architects who has been engaged in the project for the past several years.

Hawes Construction Limited have been contracted to build the new clubhouse having won the job through the formal tender process that included a number of local building companies.
