Friday 21st August
Thankfully it didn’t rain when the ladies played on six rinks against the gents on Friday 21st August. In spite of long jacks being the order of the day the ladies won on rinks 3 and 4 and had a draw on rink 2 against strong opposition. They lost on rinks 1,5 and 6.
The men won overall by a 72-56 score. Maire presented the cup to Ken King and made the announcement that like the Eurovision Song Contest whoever wins this time organises the next ladies v gents. This was greeted with enthusiastic applause from the ladies.
A delicious buffet, including homemade cake followed play and it was a very happy occasion irrespective of who had won. Pauline Holmes
Saturday 22nd August
Thame visited Aylesbury on Saturday with 4 mixed triples, the weather was perfect for bowling but unfortunately the same could not be said about the playing surface. Aylesbury have been in a battle with birds, foxes and the like all summer long. However as always, both teams had to navigate the same conditions and our Thame members did it better, winning on 2 rinks, drawing on 1 and losing on1. The overall score was Aylesbury 53, Thame 68, and our highest winning rink was rink 5, Chris Roberts, Leonard Grimshaw, and Deirdre Page by 22 shots to 7. Well done to everyone. Captain Ken King.
Tuesday 25th August
Aston Clinton Bowls club has a small membership, which meant that although we were welcomed by Captain Ian, he would not be playing as would seven of their players due to a four pairs match elsewhere and he'd only just arranged enough players for our game. The weather was dry and sunny, the green looked dry and patchy but playable.
On rink 1 were Peter Hall, Deirdre Page, and skip Roger Blackburn, playing a back-and-forth game trying to overcome a green that occasionally played tricks, but by end 12 were starting to take command picking away ending with a shot win of 17 to 13. Well played team.
On rink 3 Philippa Feltham, Bill Slade and skip Colin French, were equal with their opposition for the first 8 ends, but with 4 shot wins on ends 9 and 11 began to increase their lead to a 20 shots to 11 win. Good work team.
On rink 4 Jan Sargeant, Heather Hallchurch, and Skip Dave Holland, played a close game, at end 9 were even on 8 shots each, further wins and losses left both teams on 14 each at end 17 which meant a win for one of the teams, unfortunately 1 shot to Aston. Hard luck team, good effort. Thame 14, Aston 15.
On rink 5 John Wilkinson, Tony Battaglia and skip Roger Mackriell took overall command and by end 12 were 16 shots to 6 in front, but then Aston started to fight back, but Thame held their nerve to complete the win with a shot score of 21 to 13. Thanks to our hosts Aston Clinton, their captain of the day Sheila, and all the players for an enjoyable afternoon, my thanks also to drivers offering lifts, always my nightmare.
